Role brief

VP / Director of AI Engineering – Computer Vision

Location: Greater Toronto Area (Hybrid – Mississauga preferred)

Role Overview

Our client is seeking a senior engineering leader to take ownership of the technology vision, engineering organization, and platform evolution for a rapidly scaling AI-powered operations company.

The company has built a mission-critical platform that combines computer vision, AI, video intelligence, sensors, and enterprise integrations to transform how large-scale logistics and industrial environments operate. The platform supports automated workflows, real-time decision-making, and operational intelligence across distributed sites throughout North America.

This is an opportunity for a hands-on technology executive to shape the next stage of growth by scaling the AI engineering organization to support significant expansion.

The successful candidate will partner closely with the Founder & CEO, CTO, and operational teams to translate business objectives into scalable technology solutions.

Company Growth & Investment

Our client is a rapidly growing technology company delivering AI-driven security and operational intelligence solutions for logistics and industrial environments.

The company’s platform brings together:

  • Computer vision and AI-powered analytics

  • Remote video monitoring

  • Sensor integrations

  • Enterprise logistics systems

  • Real-time operational workflows

In 2024, the company secured a significant equity investment from an established private equity firm, representing its first institutional capital raise since inception. This investment is enabling the company to accelerate growth, expand its technology platform, strengthen its engineering capabilities, and scale its presence across North America.

This role represents a pivotal leadership opportunity during a period of significant transformation and expansion.

The Opportunity

As with the VP or Director of AI Engineering, you will be responsible for defining and executing the technology strategy required to support the company's next phase of growth.

You will lead the evolution from a highly effective early-stage engineering environment into a scalable, predictable, and high-performing engineering organization.

The ideal candidate is a technology leader who can operate at both strategic and technical levels — someone who understands architecture deeply, builds exceptional teams, and connects engineering decisions directly to customer and business outcomes.

Key Leadership Responsibilities

Technology Vision & Platform Strategy

Own the long-term technical direction of a complex AI-powered platform, including:

  • Distributed systems architecture

  • Computer vision and AI processing pipelines

  • Real-time video and sensor data infrastructure

  • Multi-tenant SaaS platform capabilities

  • Enterprise integrations with logistics systems (TMS/WMS)

  • Customer-facing operational applications

Establish an architecture roadmap that supports scalability, reliability, and future product innovation.

Engineering Organization Leadership

Build and lead a world-class engineering organization capable of supporting rapid growth.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop engineering leaders and senior technical talent

  • Establish clear ownership, accountability, and operating rhythms

  • Build scalable hiring and team structures

  • Create an engineering culture focused on quality, execution, and continuous improvement

Scaling Engineering Excellence

Drive the evolution of engineering practices by:

  • Improving delivery predictability and execution

  • Establishing modern development workflows

  • Reducing dependency on individual contributors through strong systems and processes

  • Implementing engineering metrics that support better decision-making

AI-Enabled Engineering Transformation

Champion the adoption of AI as a fundamental part of the engineering operating model.

You will help define how engineering teams leverage AI tools to:

  • Increase development velocity

  • Improve software quality

  • Accelerate problem solving

  • Enhance engineering productivity at scale

Reliability & Operational Excellence

Own the engineering discipline required to operate a mission-critical platform across distributed customer environments.

Key areas include:

  • System reliability and uptime

  • Observability and monitoring

  • Incident management

  • Production readiness

  • Infrastructure scalability

Business & Product Partnership

Work closely with executive leadership to ensure technology investments directly support:

  • Customer growth

  • Implementation scalability

  • Product adoption

  • Operational efficiency

  • Long-term business value

What Success Looks Like

Within the first 12–18 months, success will include:

  • A scalable engineering organization with strong leadership depth

  • Increased predictability in product delivery

  • A clear technology roadmap aligned with company growth objectives

  • Improved platform scalability and reliability

  • Strong adoption of AI-driven engineering practices

  • Reduced technical risk as customer and operational complexity increases

Ideal Candidate Profile

You are a technology leader who has successfully scaled engineering organizations and complex software platforms.

You bring:

  • A strong technical foundation combined with executive leadership capability

  • Experience evolving engineering teams from startup execution into scalable operating models

  • The ability to simplify complexity and make pragmatic technology decisions

  • A track record of connecting engineering strategy to business outcomes

  • The ability to influence across product, operations, and executive stakeholders

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience

  • 5+ years leading engineering teams, including managers and senior engineers

  • Career progression from hands-on engineering into senior technology leadership

  • Experience building and scaling B2B SaaS or enterprise technology platforms

  • Strong understanding of cloud architecture and distributed systems

  • Experience owning production platforms with significant reliability requirements

  • Experience implementing AI-assisted engineering workflows within teams

  • Demonstrated success scaling engineering organizations beyond founder/hero-driven execution

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in a high-growth technology company

  • GTA-based or willingness to work primarily from Mississauga

  • Computer vision or AI-powered products

  • Video streaming or real-time processing technologies

  • IoT, security, logistics, industrial automation, or operational technology platforms

  • Hybrid cloud and customer-hosted environments

  • Experience working with private equity-backed or rapidly scaling organizations

This Role Is Not For You If:

  • Your leadership experience has been primarily within consulting, internal IT, or non-product organizations

  • You are primarily a people leader without strong technical depth

  • You have not owned production platforms at scale

  • You are not comfortable operating between executive strategy and technical execution
